Service Area: Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake
Program Description: The Domestic Violence Education and Intervention Program serves at-risk residents in the Hampton roads area with a focus on the low-income neighborhoods of southeast Newport News, an area with an underserved African-American population. Secondary referrals and outreach services are extended to the entire HRCAP service area.
HRCAP’s program focuses on education, advocacy and counseling. The program is designed to assist at-risk individuals in the community in identifying domestic violence and abusive relationships, accessing resources and services available to victims of domestic violence, and removing them from situations where violent and abusive behavior is occurring. Education activities will include in-depth assessment of domestic violence within the targeted community, as well as outreach to educate the public and at-risk individuals about the reality of domestic violence. Counseling activities will include assessments of client need, safety and housing plans, trauma informed counseling and referrals as necessary to other counselors/resources.
